civilised

Refined and polite

Civilised is the British spelling of civilized.

It describes societies, people, or behaviour that meets standards of social development, refinement, or courtesy.

A civilised society has laws and institutions; a civilised conversation remains polite and reasonable.

The word can carry condescension when used to contrast one culture against another: They considered themselves more civilised than the natives.

Used loosely, it just means pleasant or humane: Let's discuss this like civilised adults.
