chyron

News caption bar

A chyron is the text graphic displayed at the bottom of a television screen, typically showing a news headline, speaker identification, or other contextual information: The chyron read "Breaking News" as the anchor spoke.

Named after the Chyron Corporation, which pioneered the technology, the term has become generic for any such on-screen text overlay.
