checkdown
Short backup pass
A checkdown is a short, safe pass in American football, typically thrown to a running back or tight end when the quarterback's primary receivers are covered.
It's the last option in a progression—a conservative play that gains modest yardage rather than risking an incompletion or interception: He checked down to the running back for a four-yard gain.
The verb form describes making this choice: The quarterback kept checking down instead of taking shots downfield.
