change-ups

Off-speed baseball throws

Change-ups is the plural of change-up, a baseball pitch designed to deceive the batter by looking like a fastball but arriving slower.

The grip and arm motion mimic a fastball while the ball floats in at reduced speed, disrupting the batter's timing: He struck out three batters with change-ups.

Figuratively, a change-up is any unexpected shift in approach: The director threw in a few change-ups to keep the audience guessing.
