change-up

Pitcher's surprise delivery

A change-up is a baseball pitch thrown to look like a fastball but arriving much slower, disrupting the batter's timing.

The deceptive speed difference—not movement—makes it effective: He threw a nasty change-up that froze the hitter.

Outside baseball, a change-up is any sudden shift in approach or pace: The album's acoustic track was a nice change-up.
