chaingun
Motor-driven automatic weapon
A chaingun is an automatic weapon that uses an external power source—typically an electric motor driving a chain mechanism—to cycle the action, rather than relying on the recoil or gas pressure of fired rounds.
This makes chainguns exceptionally reliable and capable of sustained high rates of fire.
The term often appears loosely in video games and action movies to describe any rapid-fire mounted weapon: The helicopter's chaingun tore through the building.
