cess

Old local tax

Cess is a tax or levy, particularly in British and Irish contexts.

A local cess might fund roads or public works.

The word survives mainly in the Irish expression bad cess to you, a curse wishing someone ill fortune—essentially "may taxes fall upon you." Outside this idiom, cess is archaic.
