ceramic shards

Pieces of earthenware

Ceramic shards are broken pieces of pottery or other fired clay objects.

The term appears most often in archaeology, where shards (also spelled sherds) provide evidence of past human activity: The dig uncovered ceramic shards dating to the Bronze Age.

Outside archaeology, ceramic shards are simply fragments of broken ceramics—a smashed vase, a cracked tile.
