cave lions

Extinct ice-age cats

Cave lions were large prehistoric cats that roamed Europe, Asia, and North America during the Pleistocene epoch, becoming extinct roughly 13,000 years ago.

They were larger than modern African lions and lacked manes.

Cave paintings and frozen specimens from Siberia have preserved detailed knowledge of their appearance.

The name comes from the many bones found in caves, though the animals likely didn't live in them.
