cast up

Add numbers together

Cast up means to throw upward or bring to the surface.

The sea casts up debris on the shore; memory casts up forgotten scenes.

In older usage, to cast up accounts was to add them—totaling figures by listing them upward on a page.

The phrase can also mean to mention reproachfully: She kept casting up his past failures.
