cassation
Court ruling reversal
Cassation has two distinct meanings.
In law, particularly in French and European systems, cassation is the annulment of a court decision by a higher tribunal—a court of cassation reviews whether lower courts applied the law correctly.
In music, a cassation is an 18th-century instrumental composition similar to a serenade or divertimento, meant for outdoor performance: Mozart wrote several cassations in his youth.
