carpet beater
Woven fabric flail
A carpet beater is a household tool for cleaning rugs and carpets, typically a flat paddle or looped wire head attached to a handle.
Before vacuum cleaners, carpets were hung outside and beaten to dislodge dust and dirt: She took the rug out back and gave it a good whacking with the carpet beater.
Now largely obsolete except in older households or as antiques.
