card swipe
Magnetic stripe read
Card swipe refers to the act of passing a magnetic stripe card through a reader to process a transaction or grant access: The card swipe didn't register, so I had to try again.
It also names the device itself—the slot or machine that reads the card.
As chip cards and tap-to-pay have spread, the physical swipe has become less common, though the term persists for any card-based transaction: Just do a quick card swipe and you're done.
