cannonball run
Illegal cross-country race
A cannonball run is an illegal cross-country road race, typically coast-to-coast across the United States, where drivers attempt to complete the journey in the shortest possible time.
The term comes from the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, underground races held in the 1970s.
The concept inspired films and remains a subculture of automotive enthusiasts who attempt record-breaking drives: They completed the cannonball run in under 26 hours.
