cannon shell
Explosive artillery projectile
A cannon shell is a projectile fired from a cannon or large-caliber gun, typically consisting of a metal casing containing explosives or other payload.
Unlike solid cannonballs of earlier warfare, shells are designed to explode on impact or after penetration: The cannon shell tore through the armor plating.
The term applies to artillery ammunition ranging from small autocannon rounds to massive naval gun projectiles.
