calvaries

Sculpted crucifixion scenes

Calvaries is the plural of calvary, which has two related meanings.

Calvary (capitalized) is the hill outside Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified.

From this, a calvary (lowercase) is a representation of the crucifixion, often a sculptured cross or shrine, or more broadly, an experience of intense suffering: She endured her own calvary during the illness.

The plural appears when referring to multiple such monuments or ordeals.
