buy-out

Purchase of ownership

A buy-out is the purchase of a controlling share in a company, or the purchase of someone's stake in a business or property.

In a leveraged buy-out, the acquisition is financed largely with borrowed money.

Buy-out also refers to paying someone to relinquish a position or contract early: The network offered him a buy-out to leave before his contract expired.
