burning at stake
Heretic's fiery death
Burning at stake was a method of execution in which a person was bound to a wooden post and set on fire, used historically for heresy, witchcraft, and treason.
The spectacle was meant both as punishment and public warning.
Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431.
The phrase now appears in discussions of religious persecution and moral panics.
