broke wind

Released intestinal air

Broke wind is the past tense of break wind, a euphemism for expelling intestinal gas through the anus—farting.

The phrase sounds genteel and is often used when direct terms seem too crude: He broke wind during the meeting and pretended nothing happened.

The construction treats the release as disrupting an otherwise still atmosphere.
