night riding
After-dark vigilante raids
Night riding refers to vigilante terrorism, particularly the nocturnal raids conducted by groups like the Ku Klux Klan and similar organizations in the American South.
Night riders would ride horses to Black families' homes after dark to intimidate, threaten, beat, or kill: The night riding continued until federal troops arrived.
The practice was most common from Reconstruction through the early twentieth century, though the term applies to any organized nighttime intimidation campaign.
