bowstrings

Taut launching lines

Bowstrings are the taut cords stretched between the ends of a bow, pulled back and released to propel an arrow.

The term extends to any similar cord under tension.

As a verb, to bowstring someone is to strangle them with a cord—a method of execution once used in the Ottoman Empire.
