bobby sock

Ankle-length sock

A bobby sock is an ankle-length sock, typically white and often with a folded cuff, worn especially by teenage girls in the 1940s and 1950s.

The style became so associated with American teenage culture that young female fans of popular singers like Frank Sinatra were called bobby-soxers.

Though the term evokes mid-century nostalgia, ankle socks themselves remain standard casual wear.
