blue flu

Officers call sick

Blue flu is a coordinated sick-out by police officers, who call in sick en masse to protest working conditions, contract disputes, or other grievances.

The term plays on the blue of police uniforms.

Since police typically cannot legally strike, the blue flu provides a work stoppage with plausible deniability: Half the force came down with blue flu after the mayor cut their benefits.
