blood-letting

Medieval medical bleeding

Blood-letting is the practice of drawing blood from a patient, once a standard medical treatment believed to cure or prevent illness.

The term now typically describes violence or killing, especially in warfare or conflict: The battle resulted in terrible blood-letting.

It also describes severe cost-cutting or personnel reductions: The company's blood-letting eliminated three hundred jobs.

Also spelled bloodletting.
