bloater

Cured whole fish

A bloater is a whole herring that has been lightly salted and cold-smoked, leaving it softer and more perishable than a kipper.

The name comes from the fish's swollen appearance after curing.

Bloater also means anything swollen or puffed up, and in computing slang, bloatware or a bloated program that consumes excessive resources.
