bloaters
Whole cured fish
Bloaters are whole herring that have been lightly salted and cold-smoked, left ungutted to give them a distinctive gamey flavor.
The name comes from the slight swelling that occurs during curing.
Once a British breakfast staple, bloaters are now uncommon outside East Anglia, where Great Yarmouth remains famous for them.
He had bloaters and toast for breakfast.
