blacked out

Fainted from shock

Blacked out describes a state of darkness or unconsciousness.

If a city is blacked out, its lights have been extinguished, either deliberately during wartime or from a power failure.

A person who has blacked out has lost consciousness, often from alcohol, drugs, or a medical event—and may have no memory of what happened during that time.

Blacked out also describes text or images that have been obscured, usually to censor or redact information: The classified document had entire paragraphs blacked out.
