black newspapers
Minority community journalism
Black newspapers are publications created by and for African Americans, covering news, culture, and issues relevant to Black communities.
They emerged in the 19th century when mainstream papers ignored or misrepresented Black life, and many remain vital sources of local and national coverage: The Chicago Defender, The Amsterdam News.
Also called the Black press.
