bitter-enders
Those who persist
Bitter-enders are people who persist in a cause or struggle to the very end, refusing to surrender or compromise even when defeat seems certain.
The term originated with Boer fighters who continued resisting British forces after the war was effectively lost.
Now it describes any holdouts or diehards: A few bitter-enders still insisted the election had been stolen.
