binding vote
Legally enforced decision
A binding vote is one that commits the parties to a particular course of action, as opposed to an advisory or nonbinding vote that merely expresses preference.
In corporate settings, shareholder votes on certain matters are binding on the board of directors.
In politics, some primaries are binding on delegates while others are not: The referendum was nonbinding, but the council treated it as if it were a binding vote.
