bilayers

Two-layer lipid structures

Bilayers are double-layered structures, most commonly referring to the lipid bilayer that forms cell membranes.

In this arrangement, two layers of molecules align with their water-attracting heads facing outward and their water-repelling tails facing inward, creating a barrier that separates the cell's interior from its environment: The drug passes through the bilayer to enter the cell.
