beta ray

Radioactive electron stream

Beta rays are streams of high-speed electrons or positrons emitted during radioactive decay.

Discovered in the early study of radioactivity alongside alpha and gamma rays, beta rays have moderate penetrating power—stopped by aluminum foil but able to pass through paper.

The term persists in physics though beta particle is now more common.
