bearskin hats
Tall furry caps
Bearskin hats are the tall fur caps worn by ceremonial guards, most famously the British Queen's Guard at Buckingham Palace.
Made from the fur of black bears, they stand about eighteen inches high and create a distinctive silhouette meant to make soldiers appear taller and more imposing.
The term sometimes extends loosely to similar military headgear: The guards in their bearskin hats stood motionless.
