bear baiting
Chained ursine torment
Bear baiting was a blood sport in which a bear, usually chained to a stake, was set upon by dogs while spectators wagered on the outcome.
Popular in England from medieval times through the early nineteenth century, it was eventually banned as cruel.
The term now appears mainly in historical contexts or as a metaphor for organized harassment.
