beach breaks
Sandy bottom surf
Beach breaks are waves that break over a sandy bottom rather than a reef or rock formation.
The term is standard in surfing, where beach breaks tend to produce less predictable but more forgiving waves than reef breaks: Beginners usually learn at beach breaks because wipeouts are safer.
The sandy bottom shifts with currents, so wave quality varies day to day.
