rudiment
Foundation of learning
A rudiment is a basic principle or first step in learning something: the rudiments of grammar, the rudiments of chess.
In biology, a rudiment is an undeveloped or vestigial organ—a structure that exists in incomplete form.
The plural rudiments almost always refers to fundamentals: She taught him the rudiments of cooking.
