barm
Froth from fermentation
Barm is the frothy yeast that forms on fermenting malt liquors like beer or ale.
Before commercial yeast was available, bakers skimmed barm from brewing vats to leaven bread.
The word survives mainly in barm cake, a soft bread roll from northern England, and in barmy, meaning frothy or, figuratively, crazy.
