barbicans
Defensive gate towers
Barbicans are fortified outposts or gatehouses defending the entrance to a castle or city.
Positioned beyond the main walls, a barbican forced attackers through a narrow, heavily defended passage before reaching the gate itself.
The term now often describes preserved medieval structures: We walked through the old barbican into the town square.
