backyard breeders
Amateur pet producers
Backyard breeders are amateur animal breeders who produce litters—usually dogs or cats—without professional standards for health, genetics, or animal welfare.
The term is pejorative, distinguishing casual or profit-driven breeding from responsible practices: Shelters are full of puppies from backyard breeders.
Critics associate backyard breeding with genetic problems, poor socialization, and pet overpopulation.
