Designer dogs are dogs bred from two different purebred parents, typically to combine desirable traits: a labradoodle crosses a Labrador retriever with a poodle, a goldendoodle a golden retriever with a poodle.

The term emerged in the late twentieth century as breeders marketed these mixed breeds with catchy portmanteau names.

Critics note that "designer dog" is essentially a rebranding of what used to be called mutts.
