backgrounders
Off-record press meetings
Backgrounders are informational documents or briefing sessions designed to give journalists, officials, or other parties context on a topic before a public announcement or event.
In journalism, a backgrounder provides facts and history that help reporters understand a story without being directly quotable.
Government agencies and corporations issue backgrounders to shape how news gets covered.
The press office distributed backgrounders on the new policy before the secretary's remarks.
