back pass
Backward ball transfer
A back pass is a pass directed toward one's own goal rather than forward.
In soccer, a back pass to the goalkeeper that the keeper then handles with their hands results in an indirect free kick for the opposing team—a rule introduced in 1992 to discourage time-wasting.
In other sports, back passes are tactical retreats to retain possession: The point guard made a quick back pass to reset the play.
