babesia
Blood cell invader
Babesia is a genus of parasitic microorganisms that infect red blood cells, transmitted by tick bites.
The parasites cause babesiosis, a malaria-like illness with fever, fatigue, and anemia that can be severe in people with weakened immune systems: The blood test confirmed babesia infection. (Capitalized Babesia is the formal genus name.)
