auguries

Signs of things coming

Auguries are signs or omens, especially ones interpreted as predicting the future.

The word comes from ancient Roman practice, where priests called augurs read divine will in the flight patterns of birds.

Now augury appears mostly in literary contexts: The auguries were not favorable for the expedition.

The singular augury can also mean the practice of reading such signs.
