audio cassettes

Audio cassettes are the plural of audio cassette—a plastic cartridge containing magnetic tape for recording and playing sound.

Dominant from the 1970s through the 1990s, cassettes were portable and recordable, enabling mix tapes and bootleg recordings.

They've been largely replaced by digital formats but retain nostalgic appeal: I found a box of old audio cassettes in the attic.
