tape hiss
Analog recording artifact
Tape hiss is the faint, continuous background noise heard on analog audio recordings made with magnetic tape.
It results from the random magnetic particles on the tape surface and becomes especially noticeable during quiet passages or when volume is increased.
The sound resembles a soft, steady shushing.
Digital recording eliminated tape hiss, though some musicians and producers deliberately add it back to evoke vintage warmth or lo-fi aesthetics.
