aspidistra

Shade-tolerant foliage plant

Aspidistra is a plant with large, dark green leaves, native to East Asia and popular as a houseplant because it tolerates low light, irregular watering, and general neglect.

Its hardiness made it a fixture of Victorian parlors and gave it the nickname "cast-iron plant." George Orwell titled a novel *Keep the Aspidistra Flying*, using the plant as a symbol of dreary middle-class respectability.
