antimacassar

Headrest fabric cover

An antimacassar is a small protective covering placed on the back or arms of upholstered furniture to prevent soiling from hair oil or general wear.

The word comes from Macassar oil, a popular Victorian hair dressing that stained fabric.

Though the oil is obsolete, the coverings persist as decorative doilies: Grandmother's antimacassars were crocheted lace.
