dry wells

Empty underground reservoirs

Dry wells are drainage structures designed to collect and disperse stormwater or wastewater into the surrounding soil.

A vertical hole filled with gravel or a perforated container receives runoff from roofs, driveways, or septic systems, allowing water to percolate underground rather than pooling on the surface.

Figuratively, a dry well is any depleted resource: After three bestsellers, her imagination had become a dry well.
