confined aquifer
Sealed underground reservoir
A confined aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing rock or sediment trapped between impermeable layers above and below.
Unlike unconfined aquifers open to the surface, confined aquifers are under pressure—water in a well drilled into one may rise above the aquifer's top, sometimes flowing freely without pumping.
The city draws its water supply from a deep confined aquifer.
